*Do you know what MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is?

Suggested page: MSS (Maximum Segment Size): What It Is and How It Works

MSS (Maximum Segment Size) is the largest amount of TCP application data that a device can accept inside one TCP segment. It represents only the payload, without counting the TCP and IP headers.

MSS helps TCP endpoints choose suitable segment sizes before they begin transferring larger amounts of data. For example, on a typical Ethernet network with a 1500-byte MTU, the usual MSS is 1460 bytes for IPv4 and 1440 bytes for IPv6 when standard headers are used.

Choosing the right MSS is important because packets often travel through routers, firewalls, VPNs, and tunnels before reaching their destination. Some parts of that path may support smaller packet sizes. If TCP sends segments that are too large, packets may be dropped or require retransmission.

This can result in websites loading slowly, downloads failing, connections stalling, or services working with small requests but failing with larger transfers. MSS clamping is sometimes used to prevent these problems by lowering the advertised MSS.
